buttons…

26Feb07

There was a little segment on the news tonight about why men’s shirts are often buttoned on the right, whereas women’s are often buttoned on the left. Not having ever analyzed the buttons on a women’s shirt (or a men’s shirt for that matter), it was news to me (but I thought it was [...]

via my friend Manju, reflecting on the recent passing of her grandmother:
“To acknowledge our ancestors means we are aware
that we did not make ourselves,
We remember them because it is an easy thing to forget;
that we are not the first to suffer, rebel, fight, love and die.
The grace with which we embrace life,

The Duke women’s basketball team beat UNC today 67-62 to end the regular season 29-0 – the first in ACC history! Congratulations on the great feat!  But, now to look ahead, where being undefeated really matters – for the ACC, and then the NCAA, championships!

lazy lizard…

The scheduled AirBART fare change will offset the cost of purchasing new buses and increasing service to accommodate higher ridership.

What is the difference? A few months ago, I was wondering about this question, but then it came up again at a party that I was at last night. After checking Wikipedia for gumbo and jambalaya, there was still no clarity in my mind. A Google search led to a lot of [...]

“Valentine’s Day is a day invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap.”
~Eternel Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Valentine’s Day is often considered a Hallmark holiday, but it does have historical roots going back to ancient Rome. However, that does not, by any means, justify how out-of-control the expectations around the holiday [...]

worrying…

12Feb07

“Worrying is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.”~Van Wilder

I was surprised to hear that many people have the day off today. Why? It’s the birthday of Abraham Lincoln – the president who freed the slaves. Interestingly, the day that “the Great Emancipator” was born – February 12, 1809 – is also the birthday of Charles Darwin, who became famous for [...]
